Thursday, January 6,2011 THE WORLD, Coos Bay, Ore. A5 OBITUARIES illicit photos could land girl in legal hot water A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER IN CHURCHVILLE, VA. DEAR TEACHER: Thank DEAR ABBY: I would like to share some important information with "Don't Want to Lose Him in the U.S.A." (Nov. 10). She's the young lady who is being pressured by her boyfriend to take photos of her classmates in the girls' locker room.

The students at the high school where I teach recently attended a program on DEAR Internet and online safeABBY ty. One of the things that really surprised them was learning cell phone calls don't just go from one JEANNE phone to PHILLIPS another. All text messages and calls are transmitted through cell phone towers, which route the calls or texts to the company's server. All sent messages and photos are stored on the provider's server. This means pictures deleted from the phone are never really deleted and text messages and photos never go away.

They still exist in the virtual world. Should those pictures become the center of a court case, the information is subject to "discovery." With the right equipment, law enforcement can retrieve deleted photos from anyone's cell phone. "Don't Want to Lose Him" needs to clearly understand she might be prosecuted for producing, distributing and possessing child pornography. you for delivering a valuable message that may provide a wake-up call for all my readers. Read on: DEAR ABBY: Refusing to take the photos, but keeping it quiet, is not enough.

I think "Don't Want to Lose Him" should make copies of your column and paste them on every locker to warn all the girls they are at risk even when they think they have privacy. She should also tell the principal, who may be able to provide extra protection. SHEILA IN GIG HARBOR, WASH. DEAR ABBY: I think the issue of that young woman's low self- esteem should be addressed. Her boyfriend is holding her hostage to his wishes and desires, and will probably always do so if she continues to stay with him.

It's important that "Don't Want to Lose Him" learns to love the principled, intelligent person she already is and continue to stand up for herself. Eventually, someone will appreciate her good qualities and she won't have to settle for less than she deserves. BEEN THERE IN ARIZONA DEAR ABBY: "Don't Want "boyfriend." LISA IN SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. DEAR ABBY: I am a mental to Lose Him" should report this to a trusted adult or school counselor. At the very least, this girl needs to know she will be doing a great service if she lets the other girls.

know SO they can be on the lookout for someone sneaking a camera or cell phone into their locker room. She could also use some support and affection that doesn't come from a manipulative, self-serving health professional. What "Don't Want to Lose Him" is being pressed to do is called "sexting" and it is a criminal offense in almost every state in the U.S. The young lady and whoever receives and distributes those photos could be convicted of a felony, serve prison time and live the rest of their lives as registered sex offenders. There have been cases of young people victims of sexting who have committed suicide over the humiliation of being exposed against their will.

Once these photos go "viral," they are on the Internet forever. Parents, friends, teachers and schools need to make it a priority to talk to kids about the moral, legal and social ramifications taking these kinds of photos of themselves and others. Lloyd married Mary Graham in 1939.

It was a triple wedding ceremony that included Mary's stepbrother marrying Lloyd's sister, Hattie, as well as her stepsister marrying Lloyd's brother, Leonard. Lloyd's marriage lasted 16 years. In World War II, Lloyd fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima with the 4th Marine' Division. Although wounded, he was one of 13 out of his company of 250 men to survive the monthlong battle. So many were badly wounded or killed.

In 1955 Lloyd came to Loon Lake to log for the Brooks Saw Mill on Soup Creek, now with his own logging company. He married Althea Duckett, a widow who owned Duckett's Resort. For 20 years they improved, managed and kept the harmony at this popular rendezvous spot. Humpy, his pet otter, and then the pair, Humpy and Dumpy, added to the entertainment, even joining Althea and Lloyd on a visiting, hunting and fishing trip to Alaska. He also loved 1 Center.

Lloyd Keeland Lloyd was born Sept. 15, 1920, the fourth son of Joseph Eli and Martha (Foster) Keeland, in Berryville, Ark. His father, a logger and sawyer, moved the family to Estacada, Ore. in 1925. A Christian upbringing and eighth- -grade education served him well and he went to work with his father at age 13.

They logged in the Squaw Mountain District, east of Estacada. Then the family moved to Carlton to to trap. Lloyd was a people person, always enjoying his neighbors, customers, their problems and all. He thought similarly to Lao Tzu, the Chinese philosopher in 604 B.C. who wrote: "Even if a man be bad, how can it be right to cast him off." Shake him a little first, or, "Americanize" him, as Lloyd would say.

He was a helper of men to right living. After Althea's death in 1984, he had a short marriage to Verna Rogers, then married Ellen "Judy" White Fiocca in-1989. His and other colorful residents of the area's stories are written down in "The Lusty Life of Loon Lake Lloyd," a book which has brought them many a phone conversation, especially welcome after his blindness in 2004. Lloyd and Ellen also cut hay and raised cattle on their ranch adjoining Loon Lake. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Ellen; his sister, Hatti Shipley of Carlton, stepsons, Joshua Whitkin, wife, and grandsons, Oscar and Angus of Hilton, Australia and Joby White of Chiang Mai, Thailand; stepdaughter, Faye (Duckett) Hughes and grandsons, Larry Hughes of McComb, Bob Schultz of Coos Bay; granddaughter, Jill (Schulz) Kidd and greatgranddaughter, Ailsa Kidd of Bend; and many nieces, nephews, great- and greatgreat -nieces and nephews in Yamhill County.
